Why They Differ
Osmolality: Measures the concentration relative to solute mass of water (solvent). It remains stable regardless of temperature changes since mass does not expand.
Osmolarity: Relies on the volume of the solution. Because liquids expand with higher temperatures, osmolarity values decrease slightly as temperature climbs.
Clinical Reference
Normal human serum values range between 275 and 295 mOsm/kg. An "osmolar gap" occurs when measured osmolality exceeds calculated osmolarity, which can indicate toxic alcohol ingestion.
