Square Footage Calculator — Room Area Estimator

Area (sq ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft)

A 15 × 12 ft room = 180 square feet. Use the waste factor for accurate flooring & tile orders.

Calculate the exact square footage of any room or outdoor area — rectangles, circles, or triangles. Use the waste factor dropdown to automatically account for flooring cuts, tile breakage, and pattern waste. Results are shown in both square feet and square meters for international project compatibility.

Shape & Dimensions

When to Add a Waste Factor

The net area of your room is rarely the same as the amount of material you order. Every flooring, tile, or cladding project results in cut pieces and off-cuts. Standard guidance:

  • Straight-lay hardwood/laminate: +5% overage
  • Square tile, straight pattern: +10% overage
  • 45° diagonal tile: +15% overage
  • Herringbone/chevron: +15–20% overage
  • Irregular/natural stone: +20% overage

Square Feet vs Square Meters vs Square Yards

Different regions and materials use different area units. Flooring is sold by the square foot in the US but by the square meter in Europe and Australia. Carpet is often sold by the square yard in the US.

1 sq ft = 0.0929 m²
1 sq m = 10.764 sq ft
1 sq yd = 9 sq ft = 0.836 m²
1 roofing square = 100 sq ft
1 acre = 43,560 sq ft

Frequently Asked Questions — Square Footage

How do I calculate square footage of a room?
For a rectangular room, multiply length (in feet) by width (in feet). For example, a room that is 15 feet long and 12 feet wide = 15 × 12 = 180 square feet. For L-shaped rooms, divide the room into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the totals.
How many square feet in a 12x12 room?
A 12×12 room contains 12 × 12 = 144 square feet. This is exactly one 'square' in roofing terminology.
How many square feet in a 10x10 room?
A 10×10 room contains 10 × 10 = 100 square feet.
How much flooring do I need for a room?
Calculate the room's square footage, then add a waste factor. For straight-lay flooring, add 5-10%. For diagonal or herringbone patterns, add 10-15%. If buying tiles, add 10% minimum for cuts and breakage.
How do you calculate square feet from inches?
Convert inches to feet first by dividing by 12, then multiply. For example, a 120-inch by 96-inch room = (120 ÷ 12) × (96 ÷ 12) = 10 × 8 = 80 square feet.
How many square feet is an average house?
The average US home is approximately 2,300 square feet. A typical bedroom is 100–150 sq ft, a living room 250–350 sq ft, and a garage 400–600 sq ft.
