Construction & DIY FAQs

What is a board foot in lumber?
A board foot is a specialized unit of volume for lumber. It is equivalent to a volume of 12 inches by 12 inches by 1 inch, or 144 cubic inches. The formula is: Board Feet = (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) / 12.
How do I calculate concrete volume for a slab?
To calculate concrete volume for a rectangular slab: (1) Measure the length, width, and depth (thickness) in feet. (2) Multiply all three numbers together to get cubic feet. (3) Divide the cubic feet result by 27 to convert it to cubic yards, which is the standard ordering unit. One 80lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet of mixed concrete.
How much square footage does a gallon of paint cover?
As a general rule, one gallon of quality wall paint will cover between 350 and 400 square feet with a single coat. Rough or porous surfaces like raw drywall or stucco may require more paint, reducing coverage to about 250 square feet per gallon.
